What is it?

What is it?

Investment scams represent the largest share of reported financial losses in India. Criminal networks create sophisticated fake stock trading apps, establish fraudulent foreign institutional investor (FII) accounts, and manage coordinated chat groups designed to manufacture psychological urgency and greed.

How to Verify Any Advisor or Broker

Before trusting anyone with your money, visit the official SEBI Intermediaries Portal (sebi.gov.in) to verify their Registration Number. Real investment firms will NEVER ask you to deposit money into random individuals’ bank accounts or personal UPI handles.

How it Works (Step by Step)

Written from the victim's perspective to help you spot each stage before damage occurs.

  1. 1Step 1: Victims are recruited via targeted ads on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube featuring forged celebrity endorsements.
  2. 2Step 2: You are invited to an active chat group where simulated participants cheer on daily multi-lakh trading gains.
  3. 3Step 3: You are persuaded to install a custom trading portal or mobile app.
  4. 4Step 4: You deposit small seed capital into accounts provided by the admin; the app simulates impressive trades with rapid gains.
  5. 5Step 5: Coaxed by false success, you deposit significant life savings.
  6. 6Step 6: When you attempt to withdraw, the platform locks your account and demands massive 'clearance fees' until the syndicate disappears.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Unsolicited invitations to WhatsApp or Telegram groups labeled 'VIP Institutional Investors' or 'FII Stock Tips'.
  • Guaranteed returns or claims of '100% risk-free 20% to 50% weekly profit' on stock or crypto trading.
  • Requests to install trading applications via APK downloads or unverified web links rather than official app stores.
  • Demands to deposit investment capital into multiple unrelated personal bank accounts or UPI IDs.
  • Demanding that you pay 20% to 30% 'income tax' or 'SEBI clearance fee' before your profits can be withdrawn.

Example (made up): The 'Institutional FII Trading' App

Fictional Scenario

"Rajesh (48, IT engineer) clicked an online ad featuring a deepfake video of a prominent industrialist promoting an 'AI institutional trading portal'. He was added to a WhatsApp group where 'Madam Analyst' shared daily tips. Rajesh downloaded an app via a shared link and invested Rs 50,000. Within 2 weeks, the dashboard showed his portfolio had grown to Rs 4,20,000. Excited, he deposited his provident fund savings of Rs 15,00,000. When he clicked 'Withdraw All', customer service notified him that he had to pay a Rs 3,00,000 'SEBI statutory release fee'. He consulted a registered financial advisor, who told him the dashboard figures were completely fabricated."

Why this was a trap:

  • ⚠️Deepfake endorsement -> Fabricated authority to bypass skepticism.
  • ⚠️Custom APK app -> Scammers control numbers on the screen; no real shares were ever purchased.
  • ⚠️Pay-to-withdraw statutory fee -> Regulators and brokers deduct taxes automatically; they never demand advance UPI deposits to release funds.

What to Do

  • ✓Verify whether the entity and individual advisors are registered on SEBI's official portal (sebi.gov.in) before investing.
  • ✓Only trade through registered brokers recognized on the BSE/NSE platforms.
  • ✓Remember: In legitimate financial markets, high return ALWAYS entails high risk. Guaranteed high profit is a fraud hallmark.
  • ✓Report suspicious investment syndicates to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in immediately.

What NOT to Do

  • ✕Do NOT transfer funds to personal savings or current accounts with arbitrary business names.
  • ✕Do NOT trust screenshots of massive portfolio gains shared by members inside private chat groups.
  • ✕Do NOT download custom trading software outside Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • ✕Do NOT pay extra fees to 'unfreeze' your withdrawal; this is the final phase of the fraud.

If It Already Happened: Immediate Steps

View Full Emergency Flow
  1. 1Never pay any additional money: Paying 'taxes' or 'unfreeze fees' will only increase your total loss.
  2. 2Call 1930 immediately: Provide full transaction UTR numbers and recipient account details to freeze banking lines.
  3. 3Gather evidence: Download complete chat logs, bank account transfer statements, and app screenshots.
  4. 4File an official cyber crime report at cybercrime.gov.in and report the entity to SEBI SCORES.

Investment warning: Beware of WhatsApp and Telegram groups offering stock market tips with guaranteed high returns or fake institutional trading apps. Real brokers are registered with SEBI and never demand payments into personal UPI accounts.
