What is it?

What is it?

Task and fake job scams prey on students, unemployed youth, and home-makers looking for flexible income. Scammers use psychological conditioning: they pay small, real sums at the beginning to establish credibility, before coercing victims into depositing large amounts into fraudulent dashboards that cannot be withdrawn.

The Core Principle

Employment is an exchange where an employer compensates you for your labor. Any arrangement where you are required to pay money, purchase cryptocurrency, or deposit funds to “unlock” work is not employment—it is a confidence trick.

How it Works (Step by Step)

Written from the victim's perspective to help you spot each stage before damage occurs.

  1. 1Step 1: Recruiter reaches out on WhatsApp or Telegram offering high daily pay for effortless remote work.
  2. 2Step 2: You complete 2-3 trial tasks (e.g., liking YouTube videos) and actually receive a small initial payout of Rs 150 - Rs 500 via UPI.
  3. 3Step 3: You are invited to join an exclusive Telegram group filled with fake accounts posting forged payout receipts.
  4. 4Step 4: You are told that regular tasks are full, and you must purchase 'prepaid merchant tasks' to continue earning.
  5. 5Step 5: You deposit small sums and see your balance grow in a fake dashboard controlled by the scammers.
  6. 6Step 6: When you attempt to withdraw larger amounts, withdrawals freeze. The scammers invent taxes and fines until you run out of money.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Unsolicited WhatsApp or Telegram messages offering Rs 2,000 - Rs 8,000 per day for simple online tasks.
  • Tasks involving 'liking YouTube videos', 'subscribing to channels', or 'rating hotels on Google Maps'.
  • Paying you Rs 150 - Rs 500 in your UPI immediately to build false trust.
  • Demands for you to deposit 'prepaid funds' or 'security deposits' to unlock higher-tier VIP commissions.
  • Withdrawal requests blocked behind demands for 'tax clearance', 'penalty fees', or 'system upgrade charges'.

Example (made up): The 'YouTube Like-and-Earn' Trap

Fictional Scenario

"Aman (21, college student) received a message offering Rs 50 for every YouTube video he liked. After completing three tasks, he received Rs 150 directly in his UPI. The 'receptionist' then invited him to a VIP Telegram group where users supposedly earned 30% returns on 'merchant crypto tasks'. Aman deposited Rs 2,000 and was credited Rs 2,600. Convinced it was real, he deposited his semester savings of Rs 45,000 for a 'super task'. When he tried to withdraw, the admin demanded another Rs 30,000 as 'capital gains tax'. Aman stopped, realized the trap, and reported to 1930."

Why this was a trap:

  • ⚠️Unprompted job offer -> Legitimate recruitment requires resumes and interviews.
  • ⚠️Early bait payouts -> Scammers sacrifice small amounts to win psychological trust.
  • ⚠️Pay-to-withdraw hurdle -> The classic exit scam; no further payment will ever release the trapped funds.

What to Do

  • ✓Remember that real employers and marketing agencies NEVER ask candidates to pay money to get hired or work.
  • ✓Verify job offers directly through official corporate career portals using verified email domains.
  • ✓Report suspicious job recruiter numbers on Chakshu (sancharsaathi.gov.in).
  • ✓If you deposited funds, report immediately to 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.

What NOT to Do

  • ✕Do NOT deposit any money into 'prepaid task wallets' or cryptocurrency addresses.
  • ✕Do NOT join private Telegram 'trading/task groups' where unknown members post celebratory profit screenshots.
  • ✕Do NOT provide your bank account or debit card details to receive 'salary' from unverified Telegram handlers.
  • ✕Do NOT allow your bank account to be used by anyone else to receive transfers (avoiding becoming a Money Mule).

If It Already Happened: Immediate Steps

Job scam alert: Any job that asks you to pay money to start working or demands prepaid deposits for 'task commissions' (like liking YouTube videos) is a fraud. Genuine companies pay you for work; they never ask you to pay them.
