Scam Alert: Fake Traffic Challan WhatsApp Messages Distributing Malicious APKs
Citizens are receiving WhatsApp messages claiming pending traffic violations with an attached file named 'e-challan.apk'. Installing this file installs spyware that steals banking SMS and OTPs.
How to Spot:
- ⚠️Traffic police notifications sent from personal mobile numbers (+91-9XXXXX) rather than official telecom SMS sender IDs.
- ⚠️Files ending in '.apk' attached directly in WhatsApp or Telegram.
- ⚠️Threats of vehicle impoundment or court summons within 24 hours if the file is not opened.
What to Do:
- ✓Do NOT download, tap, or install any file ending in .apk sent on messaging platforms.
- ✓Check genuine traffic violations only through the official Ministry of Road Transport portal (echallan.parivahan.gov.in) by typing your vehicle registration number.
- ✓If already installed: disconnect your phone from Wi-Fi and mobile data immediately, boot into safe mode, uninstall the app, and notify your bank to freeze net banking.
