Scam Alert: Fake Traffic Challan WhatsApp Messages Distributing Malicious APKs
Citizens are receiving WhatsApp messages claiming pending traffic violations with an attached file named 'e-challan.apk'. Installing this file installs spyware that steals banking SMS and OTPs.
What is Happening?
Criminals are sending fake traffic police warnings with vehicle numbers over WhatsApp, urging vehicle owners to pay nominal fines within 24 hours. The message contains an attached file named 'e-challan.apk' or 'Parivahan_Challan.apk', claiming it is the official penalty verification portal.
Criminals continue to weaponize trust in public administrative systems. Remember that official government departments in India never deliver mobile application packages directly through WhatsApp chats.
⚠️ How to Spot It
- •Traffic police notifications sent from personal mobile numbers (+91-9XXXXX) rather than official telecom SMS sender IDs.
- •Files ending in '.apk' attached directly in WhatsApp or Telegram.
- •Threats of vehicle impoundment or court summons within 24 hours if the file is not opened.
✓ What to Do
- •Do NOT download, tap, or install any file ending in .apk sent on messaging platforms.
- •Check genuine traffic violations only through the official Ministry of Road Transport portal (echallan.parivahan.gov.in) by typing your vehicle registration number.
- •If already installed: disconnect your phone from Wi-Fi and mobile data immediately, boot into safe mode, uninstall the app, and notify your bank to freeze net banking.
